Cancer treatment vaccines

Distinguish preventive vaccines from therapeutic vaccines, including personalized neoantigen approaches still under study.

Prevention and treatment are different

HPV and hepatitis B vaccines prevent infections that can cause cancer; they do not treat an established cancer. Therapeutic vaccines aim to teach the immune system to recognize tumor-associated antigens. Personalized vaccines may select targets from sequencing an individual tumor.

Three ideas often called a cancer vaccine
TypePurpose
Preventive vaccinePrevent infection-related cancer risk; not treatment of an existing tumor.
Defined therapeutic productTreat a specified cancer population under its own evidence and label.
Personalized neoantigen vaccineSelect patient-specific targets; many programs remain investigational.

What is being made

Peptide, RNA and cell-based platforms deliver antigen information in different ways. A platform name does not establish a cancer indication. Sipuleucel-T is a specific therapeutic-vaccine example in selected prostate cancer; personalized mRNA and neoantigen programs have their own development pathways and should not inherit that approval.

A predicted target is not a proven clinical benefit

Sequencing can identify candidate mutations, but the immune system must recognize the selected targets and affect the cancer for a vaccine to help. An immune response in a blood test is an intermediate finding. Recurrence, disease control and survival need their own evaluation.

Global treatment frontiers

Personalized vaccines are being studied as a way to train immunity against mutations specific to an individual tumor. In 2025, US teams reported follow-up of small pancreatic- and kidney-cancer studies after surgery, examining sustained immune responses and recurrence. These findings support larger trials; they do not establish a broadly approved personalized cancer vaccine.

Chinese investigators have also explored neoantigen vaccination in EGFR-mutant lung cancer, addressing a different tumor biology and treatment setting. Across these programs, the meaningful questions are whether the vaccine changes recurrence or survival, how quickly it can be manufactured, and what it adds to the accompanying treatment.

Read postoperative studies differently from metastatic studies

Postoperative studies focus on keeping cancer from returning, whereas advanced-disease studies may assess shrinkage or control of existing tumors. Understanding this difference helps identify the studies relevant to your stage, treatment history and recovery plan.

Sampling, manufacturing and timing

An individualized approach may require adequate tumor tissue, sequencing, target selection and manufacturing before dosing. Disease can change during that interval. A protocol should explain what standard treatment continues, whether the vaccine is combined with checkpoint blockade, and what happens if manufacturing or progression prevents treatment.

What happens while the vaccine is being made

Ask whether sufficient tissue remains, how sequencing and target selection are performed, and what manufacturing failure means for the plan. For rapidly progressing disease, timing is a clinical issue rather than a travel detail. Agree which established treatment continues and when eligibility will be reassessed.

Assessing an offer of a cancer vaccine

Ask for the precise product, study registration, eligibility criteria, known toxicities, cost responsibilities and endpoints. Injection reactions and fever may occur, while combination medicines can add substantial toxicity. A custom-made vaccine is not automatically more effective, and standard curative treatment should not be delayed merely to obtain an unproven product.

Four questions that separate a study from a sales pitch

  • What exact product and cancer setting are being studied?
  • Is the main outcome an immune test, recurrence, progression or survival?
  • What treatment does the control group receive, if there is one?
  • What costs and alternative treatment plans apply if the vaccine cannot be made or the disease progresses?

Treatment costs & individual consultation

Cancer treatment vaccine costs depend on the specific vaccine, any tissue testing and personalized manufacturing, the dosing schedule and combination treatment. The available program also determines which medical costs are covered and which are payable by the patient.

Contact us for an individual cost consultation. Costs can be clarified after treatment suitability and an available pathway have been established. Travel and accommodation are separate.
