“Perfect ending” – the Proton Therapy Center of Sichuan Cancer Hospital successfully completed proton clinical research
On January 30, 2026, Mr. Zhang (pseudonym), the last patient in our hospital to receive a proton therapy clinical trial, successfully completed all treatment plans. The researcher assessed that his condition was stable and his recovery was good, and he was successfully discharged from the hospital this morning.
"I am very grateful to the medical staff at the Proton Center and Radiotherapy Ward of Sichuan Cancer Hospital. The proton treatment process was easier than I imagined. I did not experience any discomfort during the entire treatment. I am full of confidence in the subsequent recovery." When he was discharged from the hospital, Mr. Zhang smiled broadly and expressed his sincere gratitude to our hospital's cutting-edge technology and the careful care of the medical staff.
Since the first proton therapy clinical trial patient was officially enrolled for treatment on August 27, 2025, we have provided internationally cutting-edge proton therapy for a total of 47 eligible tumor patients. This is not just a number, but 47 heavy pieces of trust and trust in life. The smooth progress and perfect conclusion of this clinical trial are inseparable from the strong leadership of the hospital party committee and the high attention of the hospital leadership team, and cannot be separated from the support and help of all departments and relevant departments in the hospital. Since the beginning of the proton clinical trial, under the leadership of Professor Lang Jinyi, the leader of the radiation oncology discipline and the main investigator of the proton clinical trial, a research team composed of medical, physical, technical, and nursing personnel from the radiotherapy department, in conjunction with many hospitals A related discipline, from strict patient screening, standardized treatment plan formulation, to meticulous side effect management and health guidance throughout the treatment period, every link strives to be accurate, safe, standardized, and effective. As the first research center to complete patient enrollment and clinical treatment among the same batch of proton clinical studies in the country, all Sichuan Cancer Hospital staff worked together, cooperate in unity, and race against time, writing the "Sichuan speed" of proton therapy.

With the successful completion and discharge of the last proton clinical research patient, the clinical treatment phase of our hospital's proton clinical trial has come to a perfect end. According to the currently available data, all 47 patients in the group successfully completed the treatment plan required by the research plan. The treatment process was smooth, the proton equipment was stable, and no adverse reactions of grade 3 or above occurred during the treatment period for the entire group of patients. According to the current follow-up results, 14 patients have completed the 3-month follow-up. The overall tumor control of patients receiving proton therapy is good, and there are no cases of disease progression. Next, the entire group of patients will enter the standardized follow-up phase. After completing the 3-month follow-up of the entire group of patients, the hospital will submit a clinical trial review to the relevant departments and will soon start the clinical application of proton therapy. We are one step closer to officially putting proton therapy into clinical operation in our hospital, benefiting more cancer patients.

With the successful commissioning of our hospital’s proton therapy system and the successful completion of clinical trials, ordinary tumor patients in Sichuan Province and even in the southwest region will soon be able to obtain cutting-edge radiotherapy options that are synchronized with the world at their “doorstep”. The “dream” of proton therapy will soon be “illuminated” into the “reality” of diagnosis and treatment for patients with clinical needs for proton therapy in the western region.
