Beijing Institute of Medical Device Testing Completes Testing of Aipuqiang’s Proton Therapy System and Hands Over the Report
On April 15, 2025, the Beijing Institute of Medical Device Testing (hereinafter referred to as "Beijing Institute") officially handed over the test report of the first domestic proton therapy device 360° rotation therapy system located in the Tumor Proton Center of Ruijin Hospital to Shanghai Aipuqiang Particle Equipment Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Aipuqiang"). This marks that China's first domestic proton 360° rotation therapy system has successfully completed the full chain testing and verification, and is expected to be approved for registration and put into clinical use within the year. Xu Songyan, President of Beijing Institute of Medical Device Testing, Wu Kechun, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Meng Zhiping, Vice President, Liang Zhenshi, Vice President Zheng Yifu and other major leaders and testing experts, as well as Li Rui, Deputy General Manager of Aipuqiang Company, and his team attended the report handover ceremony.
Overcome difficulties and support the development of domestic high-end medical equipment
As one of the most advanced tumor radiotherapy technologies in the world, proton therapy relies on its unique "Bragg peak" characteristics to accurately concentrate the radiation dose on the tumor target area. With the advantages of "accuracy, non-invasiveness, and low side effects", proton therapy has become the preferred method for the treatment of complex tumors and children. However, proton therapy equipment has the characteristics of large scale, complex technology, and high difficulty in operation, maintenance and clinical application. At present, the global proton therapy equipment market has been monopolized by foreign manufacturers for a long time. With the support of Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, with the support of the Shanghai Municipal New Project and the National Ministry of Science and Technology’s key R&D plan, Aipuqiang worked hard to break through key technologies and successfully developed a 360° rotating beam treatment room that integrates CBCT and pencil beam scanning functions. Since the testing work was launched in November 2024, the Beijing Institute of Medical Device Testing has established a special testing team, which lasted 4 months and invested a total of 107 people to complete the entire chain of testing work such as electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, and performance verification. President Xu said in his speech: "This test not only verified the stability and safety of the equipment in complex clinical environments, but also laid a solid foundation for the clinical application of domestic proton therapy systems. It is an important milestone in the process of autonomy of high-end medical equipment in China."
The pennant expresses thanks and demonstrates the collaborative innovation spirit of industry, academia and research.
At the handover ceremony, Li Rui, deputy general manager of Aipuqiang Company, presented a banner of "Ingenuity Testing Casting Sharp Tools, Protons Unsheathed to Shine China" to the Beijing Institute of Medical Device Testing on behalf of Aipuqiang, expressing high praise for the professional capabilities and dedication of the testing team. Li Rui said: "Beijing Institute of Medical Device Testing has provided key technical support for equipment optimization with its rigorous scientific attitude and efficient services. In the future, both parties will use this cooperation as a starting point to continue to deepen the full-chain collaboration and jointly promote the popularization and application of domestic proton therapy technology."
Innovative technology opens a new chapter in precision cancer treatment
The fixed beam and 180° rotating beam treatment systems of Aipuqiang's first proton therapy device located in the Oncology Proton Center of Shanghai Ruijin Hospital were officially put into operation in November 2023. The cumulative number of patients treated so far has exceeded 600. The treatment effect is remarkable and has been fully recognized by clinical experts and patients.
The Aipuqiang 360° rotation treatment system that passed the test this time has a localization rate of over 90% of its core components, breaking the long-term dependence on imports in the industry. After it is officially put into use, it will significantly reduce treatment costs and further reduce patient waiting times. This cooperation also provides a replicable demonstration sample for the collaborative innovation of "industry-university-research-inspection-use" medical devices, marking China's important leap from "following" to "running parallel" in the journey of localization of high-end medical equipment. With the official launch of the 360° rotating treatment system, Aipuqiang will become the only manufacturer with a full range of proton therapy solutions including fixed beam, 180° rotating beam, and 360° rotating beam. In the future, Aipuqiang will continue to work hard to provide customized proton therapy solutions to more domestic and foreign clinical experts, benefiting more tumor patients.
