A closer look at the hospital
Xinhua Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine combines a strong pediatric tradition with extensive adult services. Pediatric hematology-oncology and surgery sit alongside adult biliary-pancreatic, gastrointestinal and urologic surgery. Its clinical structure supports age-appropriate care for children, adolescents and adults.
Xinhua combines adult and pediatric specialty care. Adult oncology includes biliary, pancreatic, gastrointestinal and urologic surgery, while pediatric oncology and surgery plan around childhood disease and development. Dermatology is another example of expertise spanning both age groups.
Hepatobiliary and pancreatic disease often involves bile drainage, the digestive tract and nearby vessels. Xinhua’s surgical work includes both resection and planning around demanding anatomy and perioperative needs. Recent institutional work also includes robotics and preoperative gastrointestinal cancer research, connecting the operation with the wider treatment course.

Clinical strengths
Biliary and pancreatic tumours
Xinhua’s hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery service focuses on complex gallbladder, bile duct and pancreatic conditions. Tumour surgery requires detailed assessment of extent and vascular relationships, as well as drainage, obstruction and infection. Published clinical work includes complex operations and robotic surgery.
Care may proceed in stages: establish the diagnosis, assess local and systemic disease, and decide whether resection or another treatment should come first. The general hospital setting allows nutrition, infection and coexisting illness to be considered within the surgical plan.
Gastric and colorectal cancers
Gastrointestinal surgery includes research on treatment around an operation. After chemotherapy or immunotherapy, the team can review the changes in disease and discuss surgical timing, the extent of resection and nutrition afterwards.
Assessment for complex cases
Infection, poor nutrition and other illnesses can change treatment priorities. Explain the most pressing problem—such as jaundice, pain or difficulty eating—when requesting review, so the need for additional specialties can be considered.
Pediatric hematology-oncology
Pediatrics is central to Xinhua’s identity. Xiaojun Yuan’s team treats childhood leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma and brain tumors, and has contributed to guidance and treatment protocols for several pediatric cancers.
Pediatric oncology works with surgery, pathology, imaging and supporting services. Transplantation or other intensive treatment also requires careful consideration of age, weight, nutrition, infection and development.
Pediatric tumor surgery and congenital disease
Yeming Wu’s clinical work includes neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma and teratoma, alongside complex congenital digestive disorders. Open and minimally invasive thoracic or abdominal approaches are selected according to the child and the disease.
Xinhua combines pediatric specialties with adult hospital resources, supporting complex cases that require surgery, systemic treatment and perioperative care.
Urologic tumors and complex retroperitoneal disease
Xingang Cui’s urology team works on urologic tumors and complex retroperitoneal lesions. The hospital has described collaboration with pediatric oncology, imaging and medical oncology in difficult cases.
Rare pathology, proximity to major vessels and the possible need for treatment before surgery require coordinated assessment. An individual case report illustrates collaboration rather than a treatment guarantee.
A broad hospital serving children and adults
Xinhua’s wider specialties include pediatric and adult dermatology, ENT and head and neck care, nutrition and perioperative support. Its dermatology service grew from a pediatric foundation and now spans both age groups, with pathology, light-based treatments and skin surgery.
This combination of adult and pediatric services is an important part of the hospital’s identity. Referral should identify both age and the relevant disease specialty.

Specialists & clinical teams
Yeming Wu and the pediatric tumor surgery team
Pediatric solid-tumor surgery, particularly neuroblastoma
Wu was a corresponding author of the CCCG-NB-2021 neuroblastoma consensus and coauthored a study of surgical choices in 65 high-risk children responding poorly to induction chemotherapy. His distinct focus is when and how extensively to operate on pediatric solid tumors, especially when critical structures are involved and tumor control must be balanced against major surgical injury.

Your international care journey
State the patient’s age and intended specialty, as adult and paediatric referrals follow different clinical pathways. For hepatobiliary or pancreatic cases, flag stents, drains and recent infection. Confirm the receiving service, language arrangements and any additional records required before arrival.
Share your records and questions
Send the diagnosis, pathology, imaging and treatment history. Explain whether you want a second opinion, information about a treatment or an in-person visit. We help organise the records and identify missing information.
Confirm the specialty and acceptance
The relevant service confirms whether it can accept the case and whether pathology review or more records are needed. The hospital determines whether remote assessment or a multidisciplinary opinion is appropriate.
Agree appointments, costs and travel
Confirm the campus, first appointment, proposed assessment and payment requirements before arranging visas, accommodation, transport and interpreting. Discuss caregivers and length of stay when repeated treatment is expected.
Attend assessment and discuss the plan
The clinicians assess the case, arrange necessary tests and explain suitable options, expected benefits and risks. Discuss costs and logistics alongside the clinical plan before deciding on the next step.
Stay informed during treatment
Agreed support can include appointments, interpreting and communication during care. Keep track of questions and clinical feedback, and review schedules, costs and family arrangements if the treatment plan changes.
Return home with a follow-up plan
Before departure, collect the discharge summary, pathology and imaging, medicines and follow-up plan. Clarify pending reports and contact arrangements, with support for communication between local and treating clinicians where agreed.
What to prepare for the first enquiry
State the patient’s age and the exact pathology diagnosis. For a child, include the complete paediatric treatment protocol; for a surgical review, include operative and imaging records.
Diagnosis & pathology
Diagnosis summary, complete pathology, immunohistochemistry, available molecular tests and where tissue is held.
Original imaging
Recent and pretreatment imaging studies with reports and dates, so changes can be compared.
Treatment timeline
Operations, radiotherapy plans, each drug regimen, responses and major side effects; current medicines and allergies.
Your practical needs
Home country, preferred language, possible travel dates, caregiver needs and the questions you want answered.
Start with the records you already have. We can help identify gaps; do not arrange additional tests solely to make an enquiry.

Costs & payment
Ask what the hospital estimate includes, deposits, additional charges and refund arrangements. Plan travel and living costs separately. Insurance coverage and direct billing require confirmation.
Language & records
Confirm interpreting for appointments, communication during treatment and the language of records. Our China coordination includes Chinese and English support; other languages need advance confirmation of availability and arrangements.
Campus, accommodation & caregivers
Consultations, tests and admission may take place at different sites. Distance, accessibility, caregiver rules and follow-up frequency all affect the itinerary and should be considered once the clinical plan is clearer.
Length of stay & returning home
Assessment, surgery, radiotherapy and cellular treatment have different schedules. Ask the hospital for the expected course, allowing for results and changes in the plan. Confirm readiness to return home with the clinical team.

Questions before you decide
Which records matter if I have a biliary stent?
Include the procedure date, type of stent or drain, endoscopy or intervention report, recent bilirubin and infection tests, and imaging before and after the procedure. Mention fever, blockage or stent exchanges.
Can I request one of the specialists featured here?
Tell us your preference and we can help enquire. The hospital confirms acceptance, the specialist’s involvement and who provides outpatient or inpatient care. It may also recommend another suitable clinician within the specialty.
Can I contact Chirona before choosing a hospital?
Yes. Share the diagnosis, treatment history and the decision you need help with. We can organise the questions to consider when comparing hospitals and explain the coordination available.
Does submitting records confirm treatment?
Submitting records starts the assessment. The hospital must confirm acceptance and clinical suitability and may require more information or in-person tests. Appointment confirmation, the treatment plan and costs should be clarified separately.
